Question 1

What is the difference between a storage switch and a regular network switch?

Accepted Answer

Storage switches are optimized for SAN traffic using Fibre Channel or specialized storage protocols. They provide lossless transport and deterministic latency, unlike standard Ethernet switches.

Question 2

Do I need two storage switches in my SAN?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Best practice is to deploy dual fabrics for redundancy and high availability, eliminating single points of failure.

Question 3

Are storage switches compatible with all storage arrays?

Accepted Answer

Compatibility depends on Fibre Channel speed, firmware versions, and zoning configuration. It is important to validate HBA and array support before deployment.

Question 4

Can I upgrade from 16Gb to 32Gb Fibre Channel?

Accepted Answer

Many modular switches allow port upgrades, but hardware and transceiver compatibility must be verified.

Question 5

Do storage switches require special transceivers?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Fibre Channel switches use FC-specific SFP+ or QSFP transceivers matched to the port speed.
